Town could have bought back the Town Hall for just £155k (January 20, 2012)
FIGURES supplied to Vision for Warminster from the Land Registry show that Devo Developments - whose director is convicted offender Peter Caldwell - paid just £155,000 for the Town Hall last year.
Compare that to the hundreds of thousand squandered irresponsibly by our unrepresentative town council on Tirana Hall (the Assembly Hall).
Their excuse was that the Town Hall would cost 400k to buy but we always knew that would not be the case in reality.
Former county councillor, Steve Dancey said: ''There are an awful lof of people who will never forgive the current bunch of town councillors for squandering the opportunity to buy back the town hall.
''I certainly won't. It could still be the centre and hub of the town but these incredible people, bent on their own course of action just didn't want to know.
''Hopefully we will be able to take action to secure a better future after May 2013 but what a complete waste of six years.''
The
Town Hall became the benchmark in 2008 by which the public judge their
leaders when vfw highlighted the need for them to set about
re-establishing civic pride starting with the prominent landmark.
"This
town council have giving a new meaning to spendthrift," said vfw
co-author Paul Macdonald.
"They can spend, spend, spend on their
municipal empire building. Then each year its thrift, thrift, thrift to
pay for it when other projects are suggested.
"I
remain convinced that if the town council had grabbed the opportunity
to be a major partner in this from the beginning we would this year have
a vibrant Town Hall instead of the most expensive pigeon loft in the
country."
NOTE - Tirana Hall is expected to run at a huge annual loss as it is hardly being used.
